Company Roma: A Review of a Gay Bar in Rome
Rome boasts a vibrant gay scene, and Company Roma is often mentioned as a key player. However, recent experiences highlight the importance of clear communication and transparent policies for visitors.
A Pride Night Experience: Communication Breakdown
On a recent Pride night, while the club was understandably busy, a lack of clear communication regarding the bar's rules created a negative experience.
Upon entry, staff inquired about membership cards, which were presented, and entry was granted. However, there was no mention of a mandatory drink purchase.
Inside, patrons received a drink card at the cashier, but again, the requirement to purchase a drink before leaving wasn't clearly communicated.
Instead, it was simply stated that the first drink cost €10 that night, rather than the usual €8. After an hour, when attempting to leave without making a purchase, individuals were stopped and told they needed to buy a drink to "support the business."
While supporting local queer venues is important, the manner in which this requirement was enforced felt oppressive.
The only options presented were to either return inside and buy a drink or purchase one at the cashier and receive a coupon for a future visit. Feeling trapped, some felt compelled to buy drinks simply to be allowed to leave.
The core issue wasn't the drink purchase itself, but the lack of transparency and the staff's insistence that they were capable of explaining the rules adequately.
Instead of acknowledging potential miscommunication, the responsibility was placed entirely on the customers.
While the staff likely did their best in a high-pressure situation, clear communication and respectful service are crucial in hospitality. Although past experiences at Company Roma had been positive, this incident made it difficult to feel comfortable supporting a space that treats guests in this manner.
Recommendations for Improvement
To improve the visitor experience, management should consider implementing the following:
- Clearly visible signage: A sign stating that a drink purchase is required to exit would resolve much of the confusion.
- Multi-lingual communication: Ensure staff can clearly explain the rules in multiple languages to cater to international visitors.
- Proactive communication: Train staff to proactively inform guests of the drink purchase requirement upon entry.
Other Gay Bars and the Rome Gay Scene
Company Roma is located at Piazza Manfredo Fanti 40, Rome, near Termini station and requires an ARCO/Anddos membership card.
It's known as a "bear's den" with a basement bar, music, and a smoking room.
Besides Company Roma, Rome offers a variety of gay bars and clubs. Here are some other options:
- Coming Out Bar & My Bar: Located next to each other, these bars on "Gay Street" offer a lively atmosphere.
Coming Out is known for its rainbow flower arrangement and daily karaoke and drag nights. My Bar is more music-focused with DJs.
- Gay Bars in Pigneto: The Pigneto area offers an off-the-beaten-path experience with numerous bars and restaurants along Via del Pigneto.
Other notable gay bars mentioned include those with colorful décor, lively atmospheres, comedy shows, and poem readings.
The scene is diverse, with options ranging from laid-back and upscale to cruising clubs like Censured.
While Rome's gay scene may not be as large as those in London or Berlin, it offers a welcoming environment with plenty to explore.
When enjoying Rome's nightlife, remember to stay safe, be mindful of local laws, and plan transportation responsibly.
Remember to always check for the latest information on events and opening hours for any establishment you plan to visit.
